Judging

So, one of the things that I loved about New York was that the people were all so unique. And no-one took a double glance because of what you looked like or what you were wearing. They would wear anything, and everything seemed to go. For instance, we were waiting at the bus stop one day, and two old ladies walked up. Both were wearing midriffs, with their saggy belly skin showing. One had her hair drawn up in two side ponytails that were braided. Unique. No-one did a double take, except perhaps, for me. I thought it was great! Now in Utah, if you wear something strange or do something out of the norm, there are plenty of looks going on. There was so much diversity.

The other day, I was at one of my volleyball games. A girl walked up to me and started talking to me that I had previously disliked because of her behavior on the court. I had judged her and decided that she was stuck up. Perhaps I was the one that was stuck up. She was very kind, and fun to talk to, and I found myself thinking, "how many times must I learn this lesson before I truly take it in?" Everyone has something great within them and the potential to become a friend.

I love diversity! I love people and cultures and differences. Yet I still have much to embrace. I still have some lessons to learn, but I hope I can be the kind of person that accepts everyone just as they are and loves them for their uniqueness. That is what I am working towards, anyway.
